New Generation Smart Pouch Designs for Ostomates

stomasense.com

The Stomasense Research Group are involved in the design and development of new materials and sensing technologies that aim to overcome some of the issues faced by ostomates. Innovative approaches that could allow patients to monitor the condition of the pouch and which can analyse the contents of the output could be pivotal in enhancing care pathways and improving quality of life.  The team have been sponsored by various bodies including InvestNI and the UKRI Medical Research Council.

My Task:

Develop a low power, wireless, compact & accurate wearable, as part of a larger sensing platform for smart ostomy pouch management, achieving measurement precision on par with commercial offerings across the entire ecosystem.

The wearable: Stomasense Core

Featuring:

> A compact 28mm x 28mm size, on an 1mm thickness, 8-layer, EMI shielded mixed-signal PCB prioritising signal integrity.
> Full ARM Cortex-M33 microprocessor, Analogue Front End, Power Management IC & Bluetooth LE IC
> Fully flexible, single firmware & mobile app that works across both the Core and the Desktop Board

The desktop: Stomasense Desktop Board

Featuring:

> A compact 96mm x 59mm size, on an 0.8mm thickness, 6-layer, EMI shielded mixed-signal PCB prioritising signal integrity.
> Full ARM Cortex-M33 microprocessor, Analogue Front End, Power Management IC & Bluetooth LE/WiFi IC (with expansion for other wireless communication protocols)
> Standard circular “Push-Pull” connector for laboratory bench usage, as well as expansion connection for use in varying scenarios.
> Fully flexible, single firmware & mobile app that works across both the Core and the Desktop Board
